Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass
What is Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass?
Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) is a well-known and effective weight loss surgery that involves both restrictive and malabsorptive components.
This procedure has been proven to be successful in helping people achieve significant and sustained weight loss.
How does it work?
In this surgery, we do three main things:
Smaller stomach:
We take your large stomach and turn it into a small one. That way, you eat less and get full faster.
New path for food:
We connect that small stomach directly to a later part of the intestine.
The food no longer passes through the entire stomach or the first part of the intestine, which is why you absorb fewer calories and fats.
We connected the first part of the intestine in a Y to the new connection that was made from the intestine to the stomach
This will allow the proper progression of digestive enzymes such as bile, lipase, amylase, among others.
This way, you lose weight because you eat less, absorb fewer calories, and your body also changes its hormones to regulate sugar and hunger.
Weight loss mechanism
- Restriction: You eat less because your stomach is smaller.
- Hypo absorption: You absorb fewer calories because part of the intestine is bypassed from the normal path of food.
- Hormonal changes: When food reaches the intestines faster, your body produces hormones that:
- They improve diabetes and metabolism.
- They decrease the feeling of hunger.
This way, you lose weight because you eat less, absorb fewer calories, and your body also changes its hormones to regulate sugar and hunger.
